Alternative Education graduate credit class June 21 to July 23

Opportunity for anyone interested in 3 semester hours of graduate credit on the topic of alternative education. The course is offered entirely online and will run from June 21 to July 23. The course will cover the broad range of alternatives, including free schools, open schools, schools-within-schools, schools-without-walls, magnet schools, charter schools, home schools, and virtual schools.

Free teaching materials

We will be giving away over $400 in "Healthy Choices, Healthy Relationships" curriculum (1 per school) and training to teachers who can teach 8 lessons to 30 high school students during the 2010-2011 school year. It will take place at the Iowa FCS Conference on Monday, July 26th at the Jordan Creek Marriott.

Seventy-eight alternative high school students from ten schools/programs across the state of Iowa have had their artwork, photography, poetry, and narratives published in The Mandala, Iowa’s art and literary magazine for alternative high school students. The Iowa Association of Alternative Education (IAAE) and Northeast Iowa Alternative Teachers (NEAT), who are co-publishers of the magazine, congratulate these students from the following schools and programs:

Classes in Alternative Education

For the fourth year we are offering the AERO Start a School 101 online course. Many new schools were started by participants of these courses. You can see some of the schools which AERO has helped to start at this site.

For the third year we are also offering The History and Theory of
Alternative Education online course led again by Dr. Ron Miller. We are very pleased that Ron will offer this course again. Last year's students were very pleased with what they learned in this course.
